Bachelor Coop & Run #1
Here at CM Stars Farms we have 3 Buff Orpington roos we love dearly; Colonel, Baney, & Curious. They are gorgeous boys, but they have formed their own little mean girls clique. They are excessively rough with other roos & hens alike. When we put together our runs we decided to connect 4 runs. One gate allows us to enter the main area & the other areas can be closed off with gates if someone needs to be separated from the rest of the flock. We did this with the intent of setting up a bachelor flock. The rest of our bachelors get along surprisingly well, but while trying to put them all together, our Buff trio continued their mean girl behavior. So, we have shut the gate between the two sections of the bachelor run to essentially create two bachelor flocks, one for the "good boys" & one for the "mean girls". Lol! To give our bachelors shelter & a space to roost, we got our hands on some old shipping crates, which were free. This is the result. Is it the prettiest thing in the world? No. Is it fancy? No. Does it do the job? Absolutely! We don't think it turned out too bad for something made of completely free materials & materials we already had laying around. We still need to build one more, put wire on the top of both bachelor runs, & put in their swings & toys, but we think all of our boys will be happy, protected, & comfortable. Surprisingly, our mean girl trio allowed the other bachelors to check out their run & coop for a few minutes before they unceremoniously evicted them.
